UCDD and UCHRA – two organizations born out of the Johnson War on poverty of the 1960s. Organizations designed to deliver resources to local people. Planning and development help to local communities. The two organizations came together under a recent agreement. Progress has produced a more efficient organization where common needs are the focus, and working together is key. Today, more insight into what UCHRA does for the people of our region.

UCHRA. UCDD. Work done across the Upper Cumberland to assist people. Agents for change in our communities. Acronyms that get thrown around a lot. But do we really understand what both of these agencies do? How they help? The Upper Cumberland Development District was formed in 1969 as a catalyst for growth and regional cooperation. The Upper Cumberland Human Resources Agency was established in 1973 by the Tennessee General Assembly. It’s purpose – to serve as a clearing house for assistance in the fourteen counties of the region. Programs from elderly nutrition to rent and housing assistance to transportation. In 2018, following several scandals and accusations of mismanagement, the organizations came together with the hope of providing better service, more accountability, and stronger collaboration to tackle the new problems being faced by our region. Over the next several weeks, we want to go inside UCHRA and UCDD. We wanted to know how has the transition gone, are the leaders starting to see the results they wanted? Are these two organizations on a different course? And what happens in the future? Mark Farley leads the combined organizations.

Lillian Hartgrove talks COVID-19 decisions made by the State Board of Education.
Lillian Hartgrove quietly stepped away from the Cookeville-Putnam County Chamber of Commerce this winter. And then COVID-19 happened. For Hartgrove, it meant getting to work as the leader of the State Board of Education. Any thoughts of taking it easy were suddenly put to the side as Hartgrove and the Board began to make tough decisions about what school would look like the rest of the spring semester.

Meet new Cookeville CityScape director Laura Wolf Today In The Upper Cumberland.
Preserving and enhancing the historic downtown areas of Cookeville. It is the job of Cookeville CityScape. And now that job is being headed by a new director. Holly Freeman took over for Laura Wolf earlier this month – Wolf retiring saying she wanted to spend more time with her family. Now it’s Freeman’s turn to build on the CityScape work.

Revisit one of the worst tornado outbreaks in U.S. history from April 3, 1974.
It’s been two months since an EF4 tornado ripped across Putnam County. County leaders called it the worst natural disaster the county had suffered. Prior to this winter, that dubious honor belonged to the tornadoes of April 3, 1974. An EF4 tornado rolled across Putnam, Overton, and White Counties. It was part of one of the worst tornado outbreaks to ever effect the United States. Dubbed “The Super Outbreak,” at least 148 tornadoes struck 13 states, all the way from the Gulf Coast, to the Great Lakes. 330 died April 3rd and 4th, 1974. Marty Smith was serving Putnam County in emergency management as that storm rolled through in 1974.

The next phase of our fight against COVID-19 is set to begin. A gradual reopening of the Tennessee economy – Monday with restaurants, Wednesday with retail establishments. Governor Bill Lee emphasized Friday the economic benefits of reopening the economy, but he quickly pointed out if Tennesseans don’t continue to learn and focus about COVID-19, and practice the things that we know that will work, we’ll find ourselves right in the middle of more economic hardship. So lets focus on the learning as we bring aboard Dr. Brent Staton and Dr. Ty Webb with the Cumberland Center for Healthcare Innovation.
