One estimate says food insecurity rates across the nation for families with children rose by nearly two thirds during the pandemic. Close to 1 in 5 U.S. families reported in the winter of 2020 that they did not have enough. What is food insecurity? What can be done? Research is going on at Tennessee Tech to help with the issue. Samantha Hutson is a Tennessee Tech Human Ecology Professor.

This week, Kurt Dronebarger and Kristy Brown discuss the Basic Education Plan.
By next week, there could be a new funding formula for public schools in the state of Tennessee. Following forums throughout the Fall, and following a one week public comment period, state officials say they are ready to unveil a plan to replace the Basic Education Plan, which has served public schools in the state for better than 30 years. There is concern among educators about what exactly the new plan will look like. Will the state of Tennessee fully fund education in a way that educators believe has not happened under the Basic Education Plan? White County Schools’ Director of Schools Kurt Dronebarger, and Jackson County Director of Schools Kristy Brown have not only watched – they’ve participated in the process.

Governor Bill Lee discusses the issues at the top of Tennessee’s agenda in 2022.
Governor Bill Lee will begin 2022 with education at the top of the agenda – plan to change how local schools are funded by the state. A basic education plan called outdated by some, others say the state has never fully funded it. The state will also continue its fight against COVID-19 amidst growing tensions, much of it political. And 2022 will begin with plans to realign the state’s legislative districts with each political party charging the other of playing politics with the redistricting process. We sat down with Governor Bill Lee this week to talk about where we stand as we reach the end of 2021.
