A study published in in the journal Negotiation and Conflict Management Research say there are 6 steps to a sincere apology. If someone doesn’t want to accept your apology. Check and see if you have done these steps:
- Expressing regret
- Explaining what went wrong
- Acknowledging responsibility
- Declaring repentance
- Offering to repair
- Asking forgiveness
If you don’t think you have it in you to go through all six steps, be sure you don’t leave out acknowledging responsibility and committing to fix the wrongdoing. Saying, “I totally messed up, but let me make it right,” certainly puts you on the right track.
