How Soviet-Locked ‘Tetris’ Came to the Game Boy

In 1988, Henk Rogers traveled from Japan to Las Vegas to find new games for his company, Bullet-Proof Software, to bring to the Japanese market. The Netherlands-born, American-educated game designer wanted to find something new at that year’s Consumer Electronics Show.

CES 26 years ago was “mostly televisions and car stereos, probably much like it is now,” Rogers said. The show featured hundreds of video games as well, and Rogers found something surprising: a little puzzle game called Tetris.
