Government shutdown increasingly likely as hard-line Republicans oppose bipartisan bill

Republicans and Democrats in the Senate are moving forward on a short-term spending bill to keep the government running. But right-wing Republicans in the House have pledged to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker if he puts forward any bipartisan legislation without their demands for spending cuts.
