Marla Williams talks providing legal aid to vulnerable residents across our area

32 attornies, 48 counties across the state of Tennessee served. A non-profit lawfirm designed to help low income citizens in 5 different practice areas. It is the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands. The Society gives vulnerable residents across our area an advocate. Marla Williams came to the society after growing up in Clay County and graduating from the University of Louisville Law School.

Today In The Upper Cumberland: The Highlands Chamber & Teacher Shortage Part 2

Lilian Hargrove talks the teacher shortage in the US & what’s being done at home

From 2007 to 2016, the American Association of Colleges For Teacher Education reported a 23% decline in the number of people who completed Teacher Preparation programs across the United States. There are many estimates that by 2020 and beyond, America could be facing a significant teacher shortage. In fact, 28 of the 50 states are already reporting difficulties in finding enough teachers. Work has already begin in the state of Tennessee, and more specifically in the Upper Cumberland, to deal with the issue. The Highland Chamber’s Lillian Hartgrove is also the Chair of the State Board of Education. She along with Putnam County Schools Director Jerry Boyd are not waiting for the shortfall to happen. They’re focused on what can be done now to prevent teacher shortages here.

That’s leading to a coming teacher shortage across the United States. Here at home, work underway to help prevent this from becoming a crisis…led by Lillian Hartgrove of the Highlands Chamber. Lillian also chairs the state board of education, where she is leading work on the issue. The Chamber working with local school executives including Putnam County Director of Schools Jerry Boyd. What can be done? How big a factor does money play in this issue?

Consultants are a common part of today’s business world. But you may not realize there are historical consultants. These are men and women – professional historians – for hire. American Historical Association notes there is a growing demand nationwide for historical consultants. So what do they do? Carver Moore began his historical consulting firm soon after graduating from Tennessee Tech in 2016. His work covers many areas of the Upper Cumberland.

New science shows Autism more prevalent than ever though. The study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics….said 1 in 40 children have Autism. That’s up from the previous estimate of 1 in 59 children. More disturbing, the study found that 30 percent of those diagnosed on the Autistic Spectrum….are not getting treatment. Babs Tierno understands the challenges of Autism personally….and professionally. She leads Autism Tennessee which serves autistic families with support, education, and advocacy.

Talking health care issues impacting the Upper Cumberland with Mandy Pellegrin.

As 2019 begins, the state legislature expected to be very involved in examining the cost OF and the access TO health care in Tennessee. As they examine the issues….they have a research arm to help them understand the issues of health care, circa 2019. The sycamore institute is a non partisan group designed to examine health care issues, the impact on Tennesseans, and what kind of effects arise from legislative pursuits. Mandy Pellegrin is the Policy Director of the Sycamore Institute.
