A busy Veterans Day week across the Upper Cumberland this week as the region honors the men and women who have served. The American Legion’s Putnam County branch are getting things started early with a Saturday speech contest for local students – it’s something they’ve done for many years. It’s part of the mission of the American Legion to encourage patriotism while also serving veterans.

Today In The Upper Cumberland: Averitt Express

Celebrate 50 years of Averitt Express, and find out how the company came to be.

It began in 1958 when Thurman Averitt founded the Livingston Merchants Co-op. It was a small trucking company that hauled dry goods between Nashville and Livingston. 11 years later, Thurman incorporated the company, and called it Averitt Express. He met a man named Gary Sasser who asked him one day if he would be interested in selling his company. In October 1971, Gary Sasser at the age of 21 purchased Averitt Express. 50 years later, the company continues to grow. Phil Pierce is Executive Vice President for Sales and Marketing for Averitt.
