Sheila Says: When Llamas Attack

Oh the difference in kids. This would be like heaven on earth to me because I love animals so much. This poor kid must not have been raised on a farm like me.  He & his family are at a drive-thru zoo where you can feed the animals from the comfort of your vehicle. This boy has a meltdown when the llama sticks his head through the window to get at the bucket of food. I’d call this a case of llamaphobia.

Sheila Says: Strong Is The New Pretty

Strong Is the New Pretty is a powerful photo series that challenges traditional notions of what makes little girls awesome by depicting young girls who are empowered not by their looks, but by living their fullest, most fearless lives.  I had the chance to interview the author/photographer Kate T. Parker about why she chose to publish this wonderful book.

Sheila Says: A Memoir By A 94 Year Old Pearl Harbor Survivor

75 years ago Japanese planes attacked the United States Naval Base in the Hawaii Territory. Donald Stratton was a 19 year old from Nebraska on board the USS Arizona ship when the sneak attack happened. At 94, he’s one of only 5 survivors still living to tell their story. He’s written a memoir, the first by an U. S. S Arizona survivor, called All The Gallant Men. We speak to the co-author Ken Gire about the book.

Sheila Says: It’s Martin Luther King, Jr Day

It’s been nearly 55 years since Dr. Martin Luther King Junior gave the historic “I Have a Dream” speech. Delivered at the base of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28th, 1963 during a March on Washington, the speech is considered one of the defining moments of the Civil Rights movement and one of the most famous speeches in history.

Here are some little-known facts about the speech:

  • The speech is known as “I Have a Dream,” but those words were never in the original draft — they were ad-libbed.
  • It lasts 17 minutes and is widely considered to have been drafted in New York and then in Washington in the hours before the rally.
  • As a result of the speech, Dr. King was named Man of the Year by Timemagazine in 1963, and won the Nobel Peace Prize the following year.
  • It was ranked the top speech of the 20th century by a poll of academics.
  • It is said to have had several names and drafts, including “The Normalcy Speech” and “A Cancelled Check.”
