Meet the ocean cleanup company that’s removed 4.7 million pounds of trash

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced plans this week to eliminate single-use plastics nationwide as early as 2021. While lawmakers are taking action on land, two surfers from Florida are also fighting the battle on the water. Ocean cleanup company 4ocean has removed 4.7 million pounds of trash from the water since 2017 — and in the process, has created more than 300 jobs. Jamie Wax reports. Source

Off-duty cop was at site of deadly California Costco shooting

Police said one man was killed and others were injured after a deadly shooting broke out at a Costco in California. There was an off-duty cop inside the Costco, but it’s not clear what role they played in stopping the shooting. Nicole Comstock of Los Angeles’ KCBS-TV reports. Source

Universal Music fire may have destroyed irreplaceable music heritage

The 2008 fire on Universal Studios’ famed backlot was deemed a tragedy by movie lovers. But this week, The New York Times Magazine reported that the fire may have destroyed a staggering swath of music history. The fire reportedly consumed a vault containing the irreplaceable master recordings of an estimated half million songs – including works from Ella Fitzgerald, Chuck Berry, and Elton John. Justice Department backs decision to not release Trump’s tax returns

The Justice Department released a legal opinion Friday saying that Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin was right to withhold President Trump’s tax returns from a House committee that subpoenaed them. The decision is a victory for President Trump, the only president since Richard Nixon who has not released his tax returns. Nikole Killion reports from the White House. Source

Iran warns it will reduce compliance with nuclear deal to fight U.S. sanctions

Iran said that it will continue to reduce its compliance with nuclear deal commitments made with several countries, unless those countries help the nation combat painful economic sanctions imposed by the United States. Iran’s president made the warning during a meeting with Russian, Chinese and other Asian leaders in Tajikistan. This comes one day after President Trump accused Tehran of attacking two oil tankers this week in the Gulf of Oman. Charlie D’Agata reports from the United Arab Emirates. Source
