The negative health impacts of drinking soda

Two studies reveal how your diet can have negative and long-lasting impacts on your health in new ways. One study found that a teenager’s extremely poor eating habits caused him to effectively go blind; another found that people who drank at least two sugar-sweetened soft drinks a day had a higher risk of death from digestive diseases. Hurricane Dorian widens, threatening larger area of coastline

Hurricane Dorian is slowly making its way up the southeast coast, hitting much of Florida with strong winds and heavy rain. Dorian is still a strong Category 2 hurricane, although it’s much weaker than it was a few days ago. But the storm has also widened out, meaning it could reach a larger area along the U.S. coast. Michigan becomes first state to ban flavored e-cigarettes

Michigan is the first state to ban flavored e- cigarettes. The governor said that the ban is meant to protect young people from the potentially harmful effects of vaping. The ban, which covers retail and online sales, goes into effect immediately, but businesses have 30 days to comply. It does not apply to tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes. Source

Florida’s east coast braces for Hurricane Dorian

Mandatory evacuations are in place for eight counties along Florida’s east coast, and a hurricane warning extends north of Cape Canaveral, almost to Jacksonville. When Dorian hits, there could be storm surge of up to seven inches. Mark Strassmann reports. Source

Hurricane Dorian threatens South Carolina’s crumbling coastline

Hurricane Dorian is jeopardizing South Carolina’s crumbling coastline. When the tide starts rising along the coast, even on a normal day, the water goes over the sidewalk. Now, with Dorian on the way, all of the state’s coast is under storm surge watches or warnings, and a high tide of more than 10 feet is projected for Thursday. Nearly 250,000 people have left, rather than face up to seven feet of storm surge. Jamie Yuccas reports. Source

Neighborhoods flattened, homes shredded in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian

Hurricane Dorian is accelerating up the Florida coast, while we learn just how much devastation the storm left in the Bahamas. Parts of the nation of low-lying islands are in ruins. Two more deaths were confirmed overnight, bringing the official total to seven – and the country’s prime minister says he expects that number to rise. David Begnaud reports. Source
